ChoiceMatters Miss Virginia Movie Screening

ChoiceMatters is excited to announce that they will be celebrating National School Choice Week (January 26-February 1, 2020) with a special spotlight event!

The event will feature a special movie screening of Miss Virginia and will be hosted at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. Families, students, legislators and community members are welcome to attend! Hailed as a “must-see” movie by USA Today, the film follows a struggling inner-city mother who sacrifices everything to give her son a good education. Unwilling to allow him to stay in a dangerous school, she launches a movement that could save his future—and that of thousands like him.

The event will also feature the Oklahoma Parent Power Summit & Education Expo is a free event aimed at providing parents the tools to build power to come together and improve educational outcomes for our children. A large school expo with over 45 participants will allow families to explore different school options currently available. This event is free for parents and individuals. Expo: Learn more about all of the educational options available to students, including applications schools, public charter schools, private schools, virtual schools, scholarship programs, and other programs to give parents more power in their child’s education. Movie Screening: Miss Virginia- A groundbreaking movie for parents to learn about the real-life story of Virginia Walden-Ford, who fought against tremendous odds to create opportunities for her son’s education. Student Showcase and Reception: Featuring student performances from choice schools all over Oklahoma. Along with music, drama, and other performing arts, visual arts will also be on display from many schools. Finger foods and refreshments will be served. Parent Power Panel: Hear from parent stories and parent-led initiatives throughout Oklahoma to create better educational opportunities for students. School Awards: Recognizing some of Oklahoma’s top traditional and non-traditional schools.

Started in 2011, National School Choice Week (NSCW) is the world’s largest annual education-related celebration. As a nonpartisan, nonpolitical public awareness effort, NSCW shines a positive spotlight on effective education options for students, families, and communities around the country. From January 26 through February 1, 2020, more than 50,000 independently-planned events will be held in celebration of the Week.

During NSCW, schools across America celebrate the challenging, motivating, and effective education they provide to students. At the same time, parents use the week to learn more about the education options available to their children, in advance of the upcoming school year.
