Augusta– Parents students, teachers, and communities planned more than 150 events and activities to celebrate and support School Choice Week Jan. 20-26.

The Week featured 155 events and activities across the Pine Tree State, including open house events at schools, school fairs, homeschool information sessions, and other celebrations. One of the largest events in the state was a rally at the Maine State Capitol. In addition, a parent information session was planned at the Governor’s Hill Mansion in Augusta. Additional school choice community events were held in locales such as Limestone.

Coverage of National School Choice Week spanned the state and featured stories in outlets such as WABI, among others.

Nationwide, 40,549 events and activities were organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 20-26, 2019), and 10.8 million Americans are estimated to have participated. It was the largest series of education-related events and activities in U.S. history.

On the local level, elected officials and community leaders recognized the importance of educational opportunity by officially recognizing the Week. The city of Cushing issued a proclamation recognizing School Choice Week in its community.

Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign.

“National School Choice Week provides an opportunity for families in Maine and across America to evaluate their education options and research different schools in advance of the next school year,” said National School Choice Week President Andrew Campanella.
