Des Moines– Students, parents, teachers and community leaders celebrated the many options available to families and great schools of all types during School Choice Week in Iowa, Jan. 20-26.

The Week featured 291 events and activities across the Hawkeye State, including open house events at schools, school fairs, homeschool information sessions, and other celebrations. One of the largest events in the state was a legislative breakfast at The Iowa State House. Additional school choice community events were held in locales such as Lee and Dubuque.

Coverage of National School Choice Week spanned the state and featured stories in outlets such as Iowa Capitol Digest and KIWA Radio, among many others.

Nationwide, 40,549 events and activities were organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 20-26, 2019), and 10.8 million Americans are estimated to have participated. It was the largest series of education-related events and activities in U.S. history.

On the state and local levels, elected officials and community leaders recognized the importance of educational opportunity by officially recognizing the Week. Governor Kim Reynolds issued an official proclamation recognizing Jan. 20-26 as Alabama School Choice Week. The counties of Dallas, Ida, Jackson, and Taylor and the cities of Blue Grass, Calamar, Carroll, Cascade, Council Bluffs, Marshalltown, Winfield, and Winterset issued proclamations recognizing School Choice Week in their community.

Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign.

“Iowa is a great example of a rural state where parents have a variety of school choice options, and we encourage parents to evaluate these options during National School Choice Week,” said National School Choice Week President Andrew Campanella.
