Carson City– Students, parents, teachers, and community leaders will celebrate expanded educational options in Nevada this School Choice Week.

The Week featured 314 events and activities across the Silver State, including open house events at schools, school fairs, homeschool information sessions, and other celebrations. One of the largest events in the state was a rally planned at the state capitol in Carson City. In addition, a school fair was held in Las Vegas at MEET Las Vegas. Additional school choice community events were held in locales such as Sparks.

Coverage of National School Choice Week spanned the state and featured stories in outlets such as the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Reno Gazette Journal, among many others.

Nationwide, 40,549 events and activities were organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 20-26, 2019), and 10.8 million Americans are estimated to have participated. It was the largest series of education-related events and activities in U.S. history.

On the local level, elected officials and community leaders recognized the importance of educational opportunity by officially recognizing the Week. The county of Nye and the city of North Las Vegas issued proclamations recognizing School Choice Week in their community.

Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign.

“Explore Knowledge Academy Charter School in Las Vegas, Nevada is proud to support National School Choice Week! Yearly, the entire school, including staff learn the school choice dance to strengthen our community and to celebrate the choice in education that we have made. There is no better way to show our school spirit then having all 800 of us dancing together!” said Hope Vivas, operations manager at Explore Knowledge Academy, a charter school serving students in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Nevada offers families a variety of new and different school choice options, and National School Choice Week provides a great opportunity for families to research these options,” said National School Choice Week President Andrew Campanella.
