Indianapolis– Indiana families and educators are celebrating School Choice Week and their state’s leading status when it comes to educational opportunity Jan 20-26..

The Week will feature 981 events and activities across the Hoosier State, including open house events at schools, school fairs, homeschool information sessions, and other celebrations. One of the largest events in the state will be an Legislative Breakfast on January 23, 2019 at 7:30 AM at the Conrad Hotel in Indianapolis.

Nationwide, 40,549 events and activities are being organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 20-26, 2019), and 10.8 million Americans are expected to participate. It will be the largest series of education-related events and activities in U.S. history.

In Indiana, there are many educational options, including traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online learning, and homeschooling. Parents in Indiana can take tax deductions for private school or homeschool expenses, and families under a certain income level can qualify for state-funded scholarships for private schools. All Indiana students may enroll full-time in Indiana Virtual School without a fee.

On the local level, elected officials and community leaders are recognizing the importance of educational opportunity by officially recognizing the Week. Governor Eric Holcomb issued an official proclamation recognizing Jan. 20-26 as Indiana School Choice Week. In addition, the counties of Delaware and Franklin and the cities of Beech Grove, Perry Township, and Veedersburg have issued proclamations recognizing School Choice Week in their community.

Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign.

“Indiana is a national leader in providing a multitude of K-12 education options for families, and National School Choice Week is the ideal time for parents to evaluate these options for their own children,” said National School Choice Week President Andrew Campanella.
