Reading for a Cause: AcadeMir Preparatory Academy & AcadeMir Charter School Middle

By: National School Choice Week Team

National School Choice Week gives schools the opportunity to take the entire week to celebrate their students, parents, teachers and faculty. An easy way to put the spotlight on the importance of school choice in a fun way is through planning a traditional school spirit week – with a school choice twist.

That’s what AcadeMir Preparatory Academy & AcadeMir Charter School Middle in Miami do each year. By incorporating joy in classrooms and after-school functions, their families and staff show how much fun they are having while maintaining high levels of educational excellence.

“AcadeMir Preparatory & Middle participates in National School Choice Week because we love that we can give parents the option and opportunity to choose motivating, challenging and effective educational environments for their children,” said Michelle Font, Activities Director for the schools.

Among the events during National School Choice Week 2017 was a dress-down day where students could dress outside of their normal uniforms. The students wore school colors, along with the signature School Choice Week yellow scarves, to express their love for AcadeMir. Families were invited to attend a literacy night at a local bookstore where parents spent time reading books and participating in activities with their kids. When families decided to make a purchase, a percentage of the sale was returned to the school. The fundraiser was one that the school had done before – so event coordinators included it in the National School Choice Week plans.  “It was a great event and it showed regular consumers [customers] at that bookstore how much we love our school,” she said.

Throughout the week, students and teachers were celebrated for their accomplishments and wore National School Choice Week scarves and stickers, provided in the free kit sent by NSCW. “When our parents and students join AcadeMir, they are not just joining the school, but joining a family. We love to have our students, staff and parents come together to celebrate the school they are in,” Font said.

For schools that are planning their first National School Choice Week, or ones who are just looking for inspiration, Font says it really should just be about having fun. “Get inspired and create events or activities that kids will love,” she said. “For this upcoming year, I have more things planned to celebrate National School Choice and I am looking forward to sharing them all with you,” Fonsaid.
