School Choice in District of Columbia

There are a variety of school choice options available for many of the 130,000 children living in the District of Columbia. Families in the District of Columbia can choose from traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling.

    Black Student Fund is celebrating NSCW 2026 with our DMV National School Choice Town Hall event which is a series of activities that showcase DMV School Choice. During National School Choice Week our media events include radio shows (WMAL and WHUR); news articles (Washington Informer and Tiempo Latino); and TV appearances (DC50). We are partnering with Morgan State University to conduct a Fall 2025 parent survey on DMV school choice. The Town Hall features a panel of parents and experts on school choice speaking on the evolution of school choice options; access to all schooling options and ‘parent’s choice’.

    DC Parents Amplifying Voices in Education (DC PAVE) is celebrating NSCW 2026 by hosting Parent Voice and Choice Week in Washington DC. This is a week of organized meetings between elected officials and parent advocates to support school choice topics and educate legislators on the need for school choice. This event brings together policymakers, elected officials, nonprofit partners, school leaders, Parent Leaders, and community members to celebrate the work by Parent Leaders and award policymakers and elected officials who have shown commitment to school choice and elevating parent voice.
