Every January, tens of thousands of schools, organizations, and individuals plan unique events and activities to shine a positive spotlight on effective education options in their communities.
In 2025, we are partnering with 2,537 schools and organizations in Texas to raise awareness of K-12 education options.

15 Schools for 15 Years – Beatrice Mayes Institute will celebrate National School Choice Week (NSCW) as a featured school for their 15th anniversary with a special spirit week.
Monday:
Students receive stickers at arrival stations; Middle School students will learn the NSCW dance during PE this week. Mr. Mayes (Superintendent) or a member of the district staff will give each teacher a yellow wristlet/scarf (if available).
Tuesday:
“I Love My School” placard. Art class project. (The art teacher will select placards for social media outlets.)
Wednesday:
“Yellow Day” – Teachers and Students wear yellow accessories; Social Media Challenge: Through the support of PTO, parents will post on Instagram and Facebook why they chose our school.
Thursday:
Superintendent Virtual Roundtable with Parents (if schedule allows).
Friday:
Middle School students will showcase the NSCW dance during PE for all K-6th grade classes. Performance will be videotaped and uploaded to YouTube.

Monday, Jan. 27:
Book Scavenger Hunt; attire: explorer/safari clothing
Our librarian and curriculum coach will put together a scavenger hunt by grade level. These will be done during PE with each grade level for 45 minutes.
Tuesday, Jan. 28:
Bedtime Stories during PE; attire: PJs
Our PE coaches will have 4 interactive whiteboards projecting a story each. Students will rotate to each story within the 45 minutes of PE. They will be in PJs and bring a blanket/pillow to enjoy. Stories will come from https://storylineonline.net/. We love this site.
Wednesday, Jan. 29:
District Dignitaries Read Aloud Day; attire: school spirit shirt & slacks
We will invite our Superintendent, Directors and other Staff, to include our Administrative Team & Instructional Leaders (Principal, APs, Librarian, SCE-I Coach, Counselors, Parent Liaison). The goal will be 20 readers for the scholars. Each guest reader will read to at least 3 classrooms. We have a total of 48 classroom teachers. Time: 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
Thursday, Jan. 30:
Door Decorating Contest (for Favorite Class Book); attire: book worms
Each classroom will focus their efforts on reading their favorite novel the month of January. The class will design a book cover and decorate their door. During PE, students will be given a bag of popcorn as they stroll through our hallways with the coaches to visit each book/classroom door. They will vote online for their favorite door. Prizes will be given to the top 3 classrooms. Pizza party for each winning class.
Friday, Jan. 31:
Book Character Parade; attire: dress as their favorite book character
We will host our first Book Character Parade. Children will dress up. We will hold a Storybook Parade where all of the lower grade children will parade through the school for the upper grades, 8:15 AM. After their parade, they will go to the library to receive their own book. Then we will host an upper grade parade for the lower grade scholars at 1:15 PM. After their parade, they will go to the library to receive their own book.
