2026 National School Choice Week

NSCW Sound Bite Preview

“School choice is the process of parents choosing the learning environments that work best for their individual kids…whether that’s a public, charter, magnet, private, online, home, or nontraditional environment.”

“School choice is not about saying one type of school is a good or bad fit for all kids out there, but that every parent should be empowered to choose the right environment for their individual child.”

“The goal of National School Choice Week is to shine a spotlight on the options available for families and inspire parents who might want to choose a new environment for their children for the next school year to get the process started.”

“In communities across the country, there will be 28,000 events – from information sessions and open houses to school fairs, parent nights and more. We hope parents will use the week to learn more about what’s out there for their children’s learning.”

“We’ve seen incredible growth in school choice options in just the last five years, with 30 states expanding public and private learning opportunities. That’s one of the reasons 75% of parents––46 million moms and dads–considered new schools last year.”

“If parents want to make a change in how or where their children learn for the next school year, January is the time to get that process started. If you start now, you’ll have enough time. If you wait until summer break, it will be a lot tougher.”

2026 National Survey

National Survey Audio Sound Bite Preview

“More than 46 million parents considered finding a new school for at least one of their children last year, and one in five moms and dads actually enrolled their child somewhere new.”

“Parents are choosing schools mostly for practical reasons—like a child entering school for the first time, or moving from elementary to middle school or into high school. But about a third of parents said they made the switch because they were not happy with their child’s previous learning environment.”

“Parents today have more choices and opportunities for their kids’ education than at any other time in history. One reason for that is that over the last five years, 30 states have taken action to expand public or private school choice options.”

“When parents search for schools, their top priority is finding a safe and secure environment, followed by a place where their child can thrive socially. After that, parents prioritize strong academics.”

“There is still a gap between the demand for school choice and the number of parents who actually enroll their children in different schools. What we’re seeing are real barriers—things like transportation challenges, concerns about making the wrong choice, and simply running out of time.”

“More than 60% of parents say they’ll consider new schools for at least one of their kids in 2026. That’s up from 41% who said the same at this point last year. I expect this to be a very active year for school choice, and the best thing parents can do right now is start the search process early.”
