60% of U.S. Parents Searched for New Schools for their Kids Last Year, Survey Finds

More than 60% of U.S. parents of school-aged children considered sending at least one of their children to a different school last year, according to the National School Choice Awareness Foundation’s January 2025 survey. This census-balanced survey of 2,873 parents of school aged children found that military families, younger parents, and Black moms and dads were among the most likely to consider new schools for their kids last year. Among moms and dads across America:

84% of parents in military families considered new schools

71% of parents aged 18-29 considered new schools

68% of Black parents considered new schools

“Parent demand for K–12 education options remained strong in 2024. With 60% of moms and dads saying they considered new or different schools for at least one of their kids, it is safe to say that school choice is ‘here to stay.’ In terms of demographic insights, it’s no surprise that military families and younger parents are searching for schools at higher rates than other parent groups. Military families frequently relocate, and younger parents are just beginning the K–12 education journey with their children –– an ideal time to consider education options.”

– Shelby Doyle, vice president, National School Choice Awareness Foundation

Who’s Searching for New Schools?

  • Black and Hispanic parents were more likely to indicate that they searched for new schools for their children, at 68% and 63% respectively, compared with Asian parents (59%) and white parents (58%).
  • Parents aged 18 to 29 were more likely to search for new schools (71%), compared to 63% of parents aged 30 to 44, 59% of parents aged 45 to 60, and 47% of parents over the age of 60.
  • 66% of parents who self-identified as living in cities or metropolitan areas considered new schools, compared to their suburban and rural counterparts (59% and 57%, respectively).
  • Parents of students in elementary school and middle school were more likely to search for schools (66% and 69%, respectively), compared to parents of students in high school (57%).

What Options Are Parents Considering?

Parents who searched for new schools for their children expressed a willingness to consider a variety of different types of schools. While interest in public-sector education remained strong, school-switching parents in our 2025 survey appeared less likely to consider public schools in their neighborhoods than they were in previous years’ surveys, but more likely to consider private schools, homeschooling, and microschools.

“After several years in which we saw overwhelming parent interest in traditional public schools, this year’s drop is curious but easily explained. With more parents searching for new schools each year, and with parents gaining an awareness of how school choice really works, families are running up against an unfortunate reality: too many states make it too complicated to choose public schools outside of zones or districts. Bureaucracy itself is a barrier –– not just to choice, but to demand. Meanwhile, the surge in demand for microschooling indicates that this small, personalized, and markedly less-bureaucratic approach to learning is more than just a passing fad.”

–  Andrew Campanella, CEO, National School Choice Awareness Foundation

What Schooling Options Do Parents Ultimately Select?

28% of parents who searched for or considered new schools for their children ultimately enrolled their children in different schools. Of these parents, 60% selected public-sector schools, 10% selected full-time online schools (of which some are public and some are private), and 30% selected either private schools, homeschooling, or microschooling.

“Even though parents told us that they considered private or faith-based schools more than any other type of school last year, and even with a spike in parent demand for these nonpublic options, the percentage of parents who enrolled their children in private-sector schools after considering them remains relatively low. This may be due to the cost of attendance for families, even with the expansion of private school choice programs such as education savings accounts and ESAs. It also highlights that expanding school choice in one sector of schooling is not a panacea for all families; many types of high-quality options are needed for every family to find the right fit.”

– Shelby Doyle, vice president, National School Choice Awareness Foundation

School Searching Trends

Nationwide, the percentage of parents who searched for new schools for their children last year declined over our January 2024 survey (72%), reflecting an expected “leveling-off” of school searching after the COVID-19 pandemic era. However, the percentage of parents who searched for schools last year remained higher than in our January 2023 (54%) and January 2022 (52%) surveys.

School choice awareness is on the rise, as parents appear to be knowledgeable of the school choice options available to them. While a majority of parents (51%) said they wish they had more information about the schooling options available for their children, 64% of parents indicated the same last year.

Year% Need More Info
202365%
202464%
202551%

Parents are talking more, and more frequently, about schooling options. 60% of parents indicated that they’d discussed school choice within the last week or month, compared with 51% who indicated the same in our survey last January.

Black and Hispanic parents were more likely to indicate that they searched for new schools for their children, at 68% and 63% respectively, compared with Asian parents (59%) and white parents (58%).

Younger parents aged 18 to 29 were more likely to search for new schools (71%), compared to 63% of parents aged 30 to 44, 59% of parents aged 45 to 60, and 47% of parents over the age of 60.

40% of U.S. parents said they were likely to search for a new or different school for at least one of their children in 2025. Asian and Black parents were most likely to indicate interest in searching for schools this year (at 46% each).

“School choice supporters should feel incredibly encouraged that more families say they have the information they need about school choice for their kids. This data point, along with the higher percentage of parents who told us they regularly talk about school choice, suggests that investments in public awareness are having an impact. This is the sign of a movement that is maturing and becoming more durable.”

–  Andrew Campanella, CEO, National School Choice Awareness Foundation

January 2025 Survey of Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Parents

More than half (59%) of U.S. parents who identify as Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) indicated that they considered new schools for at least one of the children in their household last year, according to a new survey released by the National School Choice Awareness Foundation (NSCAF)

The survey, of 585 AAPI parents, paints a picture of K–12 school choice as more than just a policy, but as an important personal decision that moms and dads make for their kids. This was evidenced, in part, by the fact that 61% of the AAPI community surveyed said that they had discussed schooling options with family and friends within just the previous month.

What is School Choice?

School choice refers to the process of parents selecting traditional publicpublic charterpublic magnetprivateonlinehome, and other non-traditional education options for their children. Over the past four years, more than half of U.S. states have enacted or improved policies that allow parents greater flexibility in choosing learning environments that meet their children’s needs.

School Search Trends

In the past year, 59% of AAPI parents considered, searched for, or chose a new or different school for their child, on par with the 60% of parents of all races who indicated that they considered new schools last year. However, of those, only 29% of AAPI parents enrolled their children in a new or different school.

“Comparing the numbers of AAPI parents who looked for versus ultimately chose a new school for their children tells us that about half of those who searched didn’t find what they were looking for. Whether that’s because local options don’t meet their criteria, or logistical hurdles ultimately prevented enrollment, it tells us that parents are far from complacent with their schooling options.”

– Shelby Doyle, vice president, National School Choice Awareness Foundation

AAPI families were more likely than their peers to opt for traditional public schools outside of their communities, polling at 20%. Comparatively, only 9.8 % of white parents, 11.7% of Black parents, and 9.6% of Hispanic and Latino parents said the same. However, compared to all other demographics, AAPI Parents were only about half as likely to choose a public charter school, at 11%. Among the rest of public sector options, 25% of AAPI families chose public schools within their neighborhood and 12% chose magnet schools.

“Open enrollment in public schools is a key part of the school choice picture, and AAPI parents are the most likely to explore this path. Public school choice remains a crucial policy for states and school districts to support if they want to meet the needs of all of the families they serve.”

– Shelby Doyle, vice president, National School Choice Awareness Foundation

AAPI parents who enrolled their children in new schools this past year were far less likely to take advantage of alternatives like micro-schooling and hybrid schooling, homeschooling, or full-time online schooling than their peers, choosing these options around 12% of the time. By comparison, Hispanic parents enrolled their children in one of these options over 21% of the time, and Black families did so over 20% of the time.

Looking Forward

School choice is a frequent topic of conversation in households with AAPI parents, with 60% of parents saying they have discussed schooling options with family and friends within the past month. Looking ahead, 46% of Black parents said they are likely to choose new schools for their children next year.

January 2025 Survey of Black Parents

When it comes to K–12 school choice, Black parents are more likely to search for new schools for their children than any other demographic group.

According to a recent survey of 552 Black parents of school-aged children in the United States, conducted by the National School Choice Awareness Foundation, 68% of Black parents said they thought about, considered, searched for, or chose new schools for their children in the past year. In comparison, 60% of all U.S. parents (in a larger survey sample that includes Black parents), reported doing the same.

“The survey results show that Black families are leading efforts to ensure their children have access to education that meets their needs. With 68% of parents considering new schools last year, it’s clear that families are not only exploring options but also seeking solutions to long-standing challenges. Parents are choosing diverse paths such as charter and magnet schools, homeschooling, and online learning, Black parents are creating opportunities that address inequities and prepare their children for success in an ever-changing world that hasn’t always served them equitably.”

– Alissa Jacques, Manager of Digital Communications, National School Choice Awareness Foundation

What is School Choice?

School choice refers to the process of parents selecting traditional public, public charter, public magnet, private, online, home, and other non-traditional education options for their children. Over the past four years, more than half of U.S. states have enacted or improved policies that allow parents greater flexibility in choosing learning environments that meet their children’s needs.

School Searching Trends Among Black Parents

Notably, 75% of Black parents aged 18 to 29 said they considered new schools, and parents in cities and suburbs were slightly more likely to pursue a change than families in rural areas. However, not all families who searched for schools ultimately enrolled their children in new ones—only 28% did so last year.

Among Black parents who enrolled their children in new schools last year, they overwhelmingly selected public-sector options, with 24% indicating they enrolled their children in local public schools, 12% saying they selected public schools outside of their zones, 20% picking public charter schools, and 18% selecting public magnet schools. Ten percent chose to homeschool their children, while 8% opted for full time online learning, 5% chose private and faith-based schools, and 3% enrolled their children in nontraditional options such as microschooling.

Data shows that Black families are already exercising school choice at higher rates than their peers. For instance, 37% of Black parents said their children attended different types of schools than their siblings, a rate 10 percentage points higher than that of all U.S. parents. Additionally, 50% of Black parents reported that their children attended different types of schools than they did growing up.

“The fact that Black parents are more likely than any other group to search for new schools reflects both the challenges they face in finding environments that meet their children’s unique needs and the determination to overcome those barriers. The data shows that school choice is not just a preference but a necessity for many families seeking schools that support academic excellence while addressing systemic inequities. This trend also highlights a generational shift, as younger Black parents lead the way in prioritizing options that offer both quality education and cultural affirmation for their children.”

– Shaunette Parker, Director of Awareness Events, National School Choice Awareness Foundation

Looking Ahead

School choice is a frequent topic of conversation in households with Black parents, with 66% of parents saying they have discussed schooling options with family and friends within the past month. Looking ahead, 46% of Black parents said they are likely to choose new schools for their children next year.

What are National School Choice Week Proclamations?

National School Choice Week (NSCW) is the largest celebration of education opportunities and highlights the importance of empowering families to choose the best educational environments for their children. This effort stands out due to its empowering approach, offering families information on learning options while celebrating the achievements of students and educators nationwide. The Week’s events highlight collaboration among schools, families, and community organizations to expand educational opportunities for all.

From traditional public schools to charter schools, magnet schools, private schools, online schools, homeschooling, and nontraditional learning environments, NSCW celebrates all types of learning opportunities, ensuring that every family and student feels included and valued.

Why Are State Leaders Proclaiming National School Choice Week?

Every last week of January, millions of families, educators, and advocates participate in various events, meetings, and activities — from rallies to celebrations in state capitals and more — to promote school choice and educational opportunities. Part of this week-long celebration is gubernatorial proclamations, which are official announcements recognizing a date or occasion to bring the community’s attention to an important topic that a group of people want to bring awareness to and officially recognize.

Gubernatorial proclamations of School Choice Week are official statements issued by state governors to recognize School Choice Week in their state and its importance for the citizens they govern. These proclamations emphasize the importance of providing families with various educational options, including traditional public schools, public charter schools, magnet schools, private schools, online schools, and homeschooling, and give bigger reach to the conversation regarding all types of school choice.

These proclamations are important in many ways:

Raising awareness

Proclamations highlight the importance of education options, helping families discover programs they might not have considered.

Fostering unity

By participating in this national effort, state leaders join a broader conversation about improving educational opportunities for every child, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose among all community members.

Inspiring action

Acknowledging School Choice Week motivates community leaders to continue working toward solutions that expand access and address challenges in education, empowering families, and instilling hope for expanded educational opportunities.

State leaders across the political spectrum often issue proclamations recognizing School Choice Week to highlight their commitment to ensuring every child has access to the learning environment that best suits their needs. Having state leaders proclaim School Choice Week in their state often leads to conversations about raising awareness about education solutions. In many states, the relationships built during this process have led to collaborations and efforts that benefit families directly.

Why NSCW Proclamations Matter

Proclamations from state leaders help anchor the vision and show that providing education options is a priority at every level. For families that feel uncertain about or overwhelmed by their options, proclamations can reassure them that their concerns are being heard and valued. A state School Choice Week proclamation can show unsure families that they’re not navigating their school choice journey alone and that their voices matter in shaping education in their state.

Beyond reassuring families in the state, these recognitions also energize advocates and educators, reminding them that their efforts make a difference in families’ day-to-day lives. By shining a light on successful schools, programs, and student outcomes, these proclamations inspire hope and action on all levels. These acknowledgements are a bright reminder that everyone’s contribution to bringing awareness to education options–whether big or small–are interconnected and important in expanding education solutions.

Proclamations vs. Legislative Actions

While proclamations from state leaders are powerful resources in raising awareness about school choice in their states, they don’t quite equate to legislative actions. Instead, proclamations serve as symbolic reminders of education options and set the stage for concrete solutions. In short, School Choice Week proclamations are the first step in guaranteeing expanded education options for families, creating space for these actions to take place.

A Reminder of Impact

Proclamations issued for School Choice Week bring visibility and momentum and unite communities around empowering families, educators, and community leaders. State leaders issuing proclamations send a strong message to families that their voices remain at the heart of the mission. As communities come together to join in on the NSCW celebration, School Choice Week proclamations remind us of the importance of inspiring families and empowering them with the tools they need to pick the best educational fit for their children.

My Top Five Picks for National School Choice Week 2025

National School Choice Week 2025 took place and took the nation by storm! Out of tens of thousands of events that took place in a single week, 67 large-scale “flagship” events were planned in 39 states. As the Director of Awareness Events on the Events and Partnerships team, I work closely with the organizers of these flagship events. I am thrilled to share details about a few of them to provide a glimpse into NSCW 2025.

I’ve celebrated at least 13 of the 15 years that National School Choice Week (NSCW) has been in existence. Before my two years of being a part of the team, my journey with NSCW began in 2014 when I was the Director of Mission and Strategic Coaching for the Public Charter School Alliance of South Carolina. Just two months into the job, I was asked to coordinate buses for about 300 students to attend the capitol rally at the statehouse. Our co-host for the event was the Palmetto Promise Institute.

From that moment on, I was hooked on celebrating NSCW and was determined to expand the events while aligning them with my mission of raising awareness about the education options in South Carolina. Over the years, I have organized capitol rallies, school fairs, student showcases, movie screenings, digital campaigns, and more.

National School Choice Week is a unique public awareness effort that emphasizes the importance of students and their parents in a positive, engaging, and informative way. What distinguishes this effort from others is its empowering approach, as it provides families with information about the different learning options while celebrating the accomplishments of students and educators across the nation. Central to this mission are our flagship events, which are fun, family-friendly gatherings held in each state to raise awareness about school choice options.

These flagship events are organized by state organizations, school districts, associations, and community leaders who are passionate about promoting awareness of school choice options. Their collaborative efforts with the NSCAF team throughout the year focus on empowering families and promoting awareness events. The result is a series of enjoyable celebrations that empower families to explore the exciting world of school choice.

All-Star and Flagship events are two terms we use as a team to highlight events we think will make the biggest splash during a celebration of NSCW. All-Star events are typically community-specific, planned by schools, homeschool groups, or individuals, and highlight a particular learning option. Flagship events are planned by organizations or coalitions of organizations, have a broad impact across a state or region, and highlight a variety of learning options.

Event Highlights for National School Choice Week 2025

It can be challenging to decide which events to showcase when my colleagues and I are worked on 67 flagship events. However, I am thrilled to share five of the celebrations that took place from January 26 to February 1, 2025.

Columbia, SC – South Carolina Capitol Celebration

This is a high-energy event that felt like three events in one. I loved the pep rally-style student showcase that kicked off the day. Although multiple groups took the stage to perform, it was really a time to excite all the participants. It also allowed the adults in the room to loosen up and have fun with the kids.

My favorite part of the event was the walk to the statehouse. It was incredible to see the students celebrate their schools. There’s a lot of excitement, and it gave the public a chance to witness how passionate we are about school choice. It felt like a mini parade, complete with marching bands and cheerleaders.

Birmingham, AL – Family Feud-School Edition-Student Showcase

I really enjoyed the upcoming Family Feud “School Edition” event. This event featured a game show-style competition taking place in the middle of Regions Field, which is Birmingham’s very own minor league baseball park. I was excited to see the competition among the fifth-grade classes.

Houston, TX – School Fair

Hosted at Minute Maid Park, this event showcased schools representing a range of education options like traditional public schools, public charter schools, magnet schools, and private schools. Attendees got the chance to meet educators and get questions answered to help parents make the best and most informed choice for their family. This event was fun and family-friendly, featuring a balloon artist, photo booths, free food and face painters!

Carson City, NV – Capitol Rally

From 10:30 am to 11:30 am, students from all over Northern Nevada gathered to meet with state leaders and share what school choice means to them. This event highlighted many of the state’s educational options and the opportunities they offer to families. Featuring student and parent speakers, this event was an exciting opportunity for students to learn about the state capitol and for state leaders to hear from students, families, and educators about the importance of school choice!

Denver, CO – Capitol Rally

Over 500 students from schools all over Colorado gathered to meet with legislators and share what school choice means to them. This event highlighted many of our state’s educational options and the opportunities they offer to families. It was an exciting opportunity for students to learn about the state capitol and for legislators to hear from students, families, and educators about the importance of school choice!

While these events may be a glimpse of the celebrations, there are so many other amazing events that happened around the country. To get a better idea of what National School Choice Week had in store, check out our flagship event recap page.

Exploring the History of National School Choice Week

As we wrap up the fifteenth anniversary of National School Choice Week (NSCW) in January 2025, we’re feeling grateful for the special community, cherished traditions, and remarkable growth that have transformed NSCW into the largest celebration of educational opportunity in the nation. From coast-to-coast train tours to almost 300,000 events, meetings, and activities, each year has contributed to the Week, which unites students, families, and educators across America. Here’s a look at the moments that have shaped NSCW over the years.

What is National School Choice Week?

National School Choice Week celebrates educational opportunities for all students. Every last week of January, millions of families, educators, and advocates will participate in a variety of events, meetings, and activities—from rallies to celebrations in state capitals, and more—to promote school choice and educational opportunities.

When NSCW first began, the mission was clear—to raise awareness about effective education options for children:

What makes the Week different is its all-inclusive approach to raising awareness about school choice: traditional public, public charter, public magnet, private, online, home, and non-traditional learning environments are all invited to join in and be given equal billing in the options we celebrate parents having for their children.

Each January, we partner with schools, homeschool organizations, and nonprofits nationwide to shine a positive spotlight on tens of thousands of activities that reach millions of people. These efforts highlight the importance of educational opportunities in K–12 education.

The Yellow Scarf That Unites a Nation

A yellow scarf is emblematic of a school choice supporter, thanks to the millions worn by students, teachers, and parents over the last 15 years at NSCW events. Chosen for its bright color, similar to a classic yellow school bus, the scarf represents education and unity. The simple and versatile design is suitable for kids, parents, and educators of all ages and can be worn over any outfit, allowing everyone to join in on the colorful celebrations.

Each January, tens of thousands of people across the country wear these scarves as a sign of support for school choice and love for their schools. To the world of school choice supporters, the scarf is a statement of optimism for better educational opportunities for every child.

The Growth of School Choice Week Events

What began as dozens of local celebrations has evolved into an annual movement with more than 280,000 events, celebrations, and activities over 15 years. During the first year, NSCW partnered with schools and organizations to host 150 in-person events showcasing the voices of students, parents, and educators.

Each year, thousands of schools, homeschool groups, organizations, and individuals plan events ranging from open houses and school fairs to student showcases and rallies. The National School Choice Awareness Foundation team supports these events with logistics and communications efforts that share organizers’ messages with the public.

These community efforts have helped raise awareness of educational options and inspired millions to explore their choices.

The Train and Bus Journeys That Connected a Nation

One of the most memorable chapters in NSCW’s history was the 2014 Whistlestop Tour. Modeled after historic American whistlestop tours, NSCW organizers embarked on a 3,800-mile journey, stopping in 14 cities across the country, from Grand Central Station in New York City to Union Station in Los Angeles.

First traveling by train, and then by bus, in 2015, school choice advocates, families, and educators gathered at each stop to celebrate educational opportunities for families.

This cross-country journey united students, parents, educators, and community leaders to honor the diverse school choice options available and to call for expanded access nationwide.

Our Schools Program

The National School Choice Week’s Schools Program has been instrumental in making it easier for schools to participate in NSCW. Through the program, schools receive planning guides, resources, and materials to host their own events, meetings, and activities. What began as a small initiative has grown into a widespread program that empowers schools and homeschool groups to bring NSCW into their communities.

By supporting these locally organized events, the Schools Program has allowed NSCW to meet families where they are, bringing the school choice message directly to communities across all 50 states.

Looking Forward

Over the years, NSCW has touched countless lives, from parents discovering new options for their children to students and teachers celebrating great learning environments together. The Week continues to change families’ lives every year, as participants and parents from across the country continue to share with us. In this decade, families’ choices are growing and evolving more quickly than ever, and NSCW will only grow in scale and significance as it kickstarts school choice journeys across the country.

Ways Schools Are Encouraging Parental Involvement

Parental involvement is a cornerstone of student success. When schools actively encourage and facilitate meaningful family participation, the entire educational community benefits. From improved academic performance to better behavioral outcomes, the positive effects of engaged parents are undeniable. Schools and districts nationwide are finding creative ways to inspire family involvement.

The Importance of Encouraging Parental Involvement in Schools

Encouraging parental involvement in schools helps bridge the gap between the home and the educational environment, providing students with the support they need to thrive. Whether through volunteering, attending back-to-school meetings, or taking part in school decisions, parents’ engagement supports both their children and the school community.

When parents, teachers, and school leaders work together, students benefit academically and emotionally. Parents who take part in school events help build stronger communication between families and teachers. This leads to extra support for students who need it and a clearer understanding of what students need to succeed—all of which help schools improve. By actively engaging parents, schools create a more inclusive and effective educational experience.

Scroll down through the page to get an idea of how schools, districts, and organizations we work with during National School Choice Week foster parental involvement all year-round!

Community Engagement and Partnerships

Partnerships with local businesses and organizations offer additional support to both schools and families. In Maryland, Impact Humanity Inc. holds an annual Community Impact Day.

Founder Antonio Beard explains:Our schools thrive because of the powerful partnerships we foster with families, local businesses, and organizations that share our mission of empowering students for the future. Family nights and open houses across our district provide families with opportunities to actively engage with their children’s education. From our active Parent-Teacher Organizations (P.T.O.s) at every school to the booster clubs that ensure our high school students have the resources and experiences they need, the commitment from our parents is unparalleled.”

On a district level, Queen Creek Unified School District in Arizona hosts events such as community and family engagement sessions.

Director Amanda deNight says:These events stand as a testament to our collaborative spirit. These gatherings connect parent volunteers, faith leaders, and local business owners with our school principals, facilitating conversations that lead to school improvements and student success. Our district thrives because of the strong relationships we build with families and community members who are deeply invested in our students’ success. By fostering these partnerships, we not only enhance the educational experience but also strengthen the bonds that tie our schools to the broader Queen Creek community. Together, we’re shaping a future where every student has the support, opportunities, and encouragement needed to excel.”

Academic and Student Support Programs

Schools offer a range of programs to help parents actively support their children’s academic growth. At McKissick Academy, Whitney Moore describes how they bridge the gap between home and school:

“We offer Title I family nights, where families come into the school to participate in activities and see evidence of their child’s learning. We also host four Parent Workshops centered around literacy. Some examples of these sessions include working on phonics at home and understanding story problems. Families are also included in our Shark of the Month breakfast to celebrate their child’s success at school. We offer early literacy workshops for families in our community with children who are too young for school. During these workshops, we model early literacy skills, give families a book, and provide an activity they can complete at home.”

Similarly, Bel-Aire Elementary in Florida holds tech-focused events to help parents navigate the digital side of education.

Brittany Gibson, a school representative, shares the following:“We invited all of the Kindergarten parents to a ‘Parent Assistance’ afternoon to explain how they can access the Parent Portal. The Parent Portal has access to the student’s grades, attendance, and upcoming assignments through Schoology. We also encouraged them to become school volunteers in the school and explained the process.”

Art and Cultural Engagement

At the Arkansas Arts Academy, parents are invited to engage with their children’s creative projects through the school’s mission of arts integration.

Chief Executive Officer Dr. Allison Roberts explains: “We held a Grand Opening Ceremony for our A3 Gallery. A gallery space dedicated to highlighting the creative responses from all students K-12, open to the public, and a space where our community can experience art education and arts integration through firsthand experiences. Whether our students are making, performing, or exhibiting, we provide our students with venues for this highest level of critical thinking and creative response. “

The district also offers numerous volunteer opportunities and recognizes these contributions through an end-of-year celebration in which each volunteer receives a piece of student art as a gift.

A.A.A. offers many opportunities for parents to volunteer. We have a school foundation- our fundraising arm, and also a very active P.T.A. and P.T.S.A. We are holding our first volunteer celebration at the end of the school year in tribute to all of our school volunteers- providing them with a piece of student art as a gift.”

Parent Engagement and Volunteering

Many schools begin the year with events designed to connect parents with the school community and with each other. For example, Holm Elementary School in Denver hosted several events to build early engagement.

According to Principal April Jones: “At our Meet and Greet, students and families had an opportunity to meet their child’s teacher, receive important information about the upcoming year, grab a popsicle, and, if needed, receive a free backpack filled with school supplies (donated by a local church). On August 29th, Holm held their first Dine Out event at Raising Cane’s. Many of our families attended this event. The proceeds from this event will help our parent group sponsor different events throughout the year, such as the end-of-the-year carnival, guest speakers, performances, and after-school clubs. Then, on September 12th, Holm hosted their Back to School Night. Over 200 families showed up to learn about what has been happening in their child’s classroom, the curriculum used, and how being a Title 1 school guarantees them certain rights. We had a lot of fun. We even had a visit from our mascot, ‘The Lil’ Husky.’ Hosting all these fun events ensures that we are always thinking of ways to feel safe and welcomed at our school.

By creating spaces for parents to engage, from academic workshops to community events, schools foster deeper connections that benefit students and build strong, supportive school communities.

“That evening we celebrated neurodiversity with our Silent Disco Party. It was a way for families to see how we support students at our school each day. (Our Dino Lab was there, Lego Stations, Headphones for sensory support, fidget station, etc) I think our community came together and realized that even though we are different in so many ways; race, religion, politics, etc, we all agree that we want access to the best education for our students. As a result our enrollment continues to increase and we continue to create local and national partnerships with organizations that believe in highlighting and supporting our neurodivergent students. Thank you. ” – Kenisha Skaggs, Director and Founder of SOAR Academy School and Tutoring Center.
